3 Things to Remember When Buying a Memory Foam Mattress

Memory foam has become a popular mattress component and construction but it may still be an unfamiliar material to many people.

Here’s what you need to look for as you shop for a memory foam mattress. If you want, find out more at Sleep Junkie.

  1. What Density Means

Memory foam is measured by the pounds per cubic foot. Low-density foams have 3 or fewer pounds per cubic foot, which makes it softer and cheaper to produce. High-density foam is at least 6 pounds per cubic foot and is much firmer and more expensive. The most common density, though, is a medium one at 4 to 5 pounds that offers support and comfort.

A mattress topper is more likely to be a lower density foam while a mattress may contain layers of different densities.

  1. It’s Not for Everyone

Memory foam is temperature sensitive and molds to the shape of your body as you warm it, then slowly springs back and adjusts to your new position as you move. Some people find that memory foam doesn’t spring back quickly enough to suit their preferences, making it difficult to immediately get comfortable again.

Others don’t like how tightly memory foam conforms to your body, which, along with the mattress’ density, can retain heat. This molding feature also makes memory foam a potentially dangerous choice for babies.

If excess heat is a concern, you can look for a gel-infused memory foam that is designed to be cooler.

  1. There are More Eco-Friendly Options

Traditional memory foam is crafted from manmade substances, chemicals and petroleum byproducts. It can have an odor and chemical emissions.

Memory foam can also be made with plant-based oils that reduce the amount of petroleum products that are used. Plant-based memory foam tends to retain less heat and can be certified to be free of chemicals that can trigger allergies and irritate your respiratory system.

If you decide that memory foam is a good fit, the right mattress is out there ready to offer a fantastic night’s sleep.
